born   to   a   large   family   in   a   small   community   of   wood   elves   in   geth,   merilwen’s   mother   taught   her   and   her   sisters   the   ways   of   druid   craft   before   merilwen   leaves   to   care   for   her   grandmother:      another   druid   deeper   into   the   woods.      her   grandmother’s   methods   of   rearing   children   are   not   so   soft   and   gentle   as   merilwen’s   parents’;      she   teaches   merilwen   much   in   the   way   of   magic,   but   she   teaches   her   the   harsh   adherence   to   nature   and   the   ways   of   protecting   animals   and   the   wilds,   and   the   mistrust   of   creatures   outside   their   woods,   particularly   humans.      when   her   grandmother   dies,   merilwen   remains   on   her   own,   hunting   and   surviving   alone   until   she   finds   a   snared   wild   cat.      she   saves   the   cat,   who   then   becomes   her   companion   ‘simon’   until   his   eventual   death,   at   which   time   merilwen   learns   her   first   wild   shape:      a   wild   cat.
